Storm Over Stonehenge

8x10" acrylic on canvas board, $65. Available here

Yet another painting inspired by the cloud challenge! I dug out a super-old photograph of Stonehenge, taken as we drove past it on the motorway, as my reference. I can never decide whether I prefer painting peaceful or stormy skies, they're both great challenges in different ways. In this case, it's getting all the subtle variations of grey right.

Rain In The Distance

Whoops I forgot to post this one yesterday!

After Strong Winds

6x8" oil on canvas board. $45. Available here

A small plein air painting from a few days ago- I came across a tree which had blown down and was blocking the path. The one next to it had several broken branches. I'm guessing it happened fairly recently as the only people who really walk through this little area of woodland are locals, and quite a few of them seemed surprised to see it.

Yorkshire Storm

6x8" oil on canvas board. $45 Available here

More stormclouds in an attempt to break the painting block! Grey is such an interesting colour to paint, so many subtle hue shifts.

Grey Skies

5x7" oil on canvas board. SOLD

After the string of hot days we've had lately I've been longing for a stormy grey sky like this.

Morning by the Canal

5x7" oil on canvas board, $40. Available here

Here's a study of the canal that runs from Liverpool to Leeds. It's not always fun to go walking on rainy mornings, but the light is incredible. You can see stormclouds rolling in over the hills here.

Head in the Clouds

4x5" acrylic on canvas board. $30. Available here

Here's a little landscape with a mountain, half-hidden by low cloud. I really love the dramatic contrast of the stormy sky and the streak of sunlight hitting the ground.

A Break in the Clouds

6x6" acrylic on canvas board. SOLD
I'm in the middle of backing up everything on my computer, preparing to upgrade to Windows 10. It's amazing how quickly the 'stuff' on a computer multiplies- I have a sprawling mass of folders to go through, and a ton of software I only use for five minutes a year, and it is a big, big job to figure out what needs saving and what I can lose.

Anyway, the point is that I needed something calming to help me prepare for the long night ahead, so here's a cloud study. I love the way light hits the edge of dark clouds, creating amazing contrast.

This painting features many of my favourite things. River, mountains, tall grasses, and grey skies. I really like the fluidity of this, it came out looking like oil paint!

Here I go painting stormy skies again. It's a bit of a fixation for me. I love the motion and drama in them.

English Sky

5x7 inches, acrylic on canvas board. $40

Place a Bid

Skies are one of my favourite things to paint, especially wild, stormy skies. This painting was originally a landscape, but I ended up losing interest in the land so I turned it into a study of clouds and light. I much prefer this version!

White House Among Fields

23 November 2015.

5x7 inches, oil on canvas board. SOLD.

A little landscape with a stormy sky. I love painting grey skies, maybe it's because I'm English and we have a lot of overcast, rainy days here. I think they have a beauty to them.
