Yellow House I

5x7” oil on canvas board. $40
Available on Daily Paintworks here

I went out for a walk the other day, hoping to do some plein air painting. Unfortunately I didn't get any painting done, but I did take some reference photos. Among them was one of this yellow house next to a small meadow, which caught my attention due to the way light was hitting it.

It came out pretty well, and it has given me motivation to paint buildings more often- I have been guilty of avoiding them in the past because they're quite a challenge for me. I think my favourite part of this painting is the blue of the sky reflecting in the windows.

Dusk Over The Meadow

5x7” oil on canvas board. $40

Available from Daily Paintworks here

This one is inspired by a photo I took on my phone while walking home one evening. It captures the last strains of daylight over a meadow, with the lights of distant houses shining amid the dark trees. It was really enjoyable to work on this sky, with its variety of muted tones.

Vojvodina Landscape

6x6” oil on canvas board. $40
Available on Daily Paintworks here

This is painted from a pastel study I did a while back, and then kind of forgot about. I was drawn to the strong, dark foliage of the tree set against the pale sky, and the combination of reddish browns and yellow-greens of the fields. I exaggerated the height of the hill in the background slightly to balance the composition.

Meadow With Purple Flowers

6x8” oil on canvas board. $45
Available on Daily Paintworks here

Purple flowers grow among long grass in a tree-lined meadow.

I am going through a period where I feel like I am learning a lot from each painting, which is a relief after experiencing a bit of a slump earlier in the month. I really love how you can see the brushstrokes in this one, it has that painterly look that I've always wanted to achieve. I mentioned in yesterday's painting I sometimes over-detail and lose it- not this time!

Red Boat, Wesport Quay

6x6 inches, acrylic on canvas board. SOLD

All those curves are so difficult to keep in perspective! I was really drawn to how the bright red stood out against the greys and greens surrounding it. This was one of the most challenging paintings I’ve done in quite a while.

A still life with the usual suspects- a glass, mange tout and cherry tomatoes. I just wanted to try this colour scheme, I haven’t used it in a while!

River and Mountain

6x6 inches, acrylic on canvas board. $40

This one has an interesting quality to it, there was something slightly mystical about the light in my reference so I tried to capture that. It’s a simple composition but I think the clean, bright colours make it work.

Rushing River

I really like the way the motion of the water, and the clouds, mirror each other! This one has a little more surface texture than most of my landscapes. I really like the way the trees in the top left corner came out.

This painting features many of my favourite things. River, mountains, tall grasses, and grey skies. I really like the fluidity of this, it came out looking like oil paint!

Glass and Colourful Salad

Acrylic on Canvas Board. $45

Place a Bid

Here's a colourful, healthy-looking still life. It's been a while since I painted this glass! I forgot how much of a pain ellipses are to get right. I like the deep purples in its base, though, and the vibrancy of the yellows in the lemon.

Chrysanthemums in Glass Jar

7x5 inches, acrylic on canvas board. SOLD

Here's another painting of my chrysanthemums in their little jar. It makes a great vase for small flowers, perfect desk size. I'm really enjoying these flower studies- very delicate shapes, and lots of complex patterns of light and dark. I think this is my favourite so far.

Pink Chrysanthemum Study

Here's a loose study of one of the flowers from yesterday's painting. I wanted to try sketchier brushstrokes this time. I quite like how the leaves have become an important feature of the composition.

English Sky

5x7 inches, acrylic on canvas board. $40

Skies are one of my favourite things to paint, especially wild, stormy skies. This painting was originally a landscape, but I ended up losing interest in the land so I turned it into a study of clouds and light. I much prefer this version!
